Task:
Click on the Phet site link above and do the tasks below.
Setup:
- Under the home page that says "Build an Atom", click on "Atom".
- Expand the following panels:
- Net Charge, Mass Number.
- Check mark the "Stable/Unstable" element under the "show" panel.
Window Key Elements:
- On the main window, you'll notice 2 concentric circles - this is a model of your atom.
- On the bottom are the three subatomic particles - "Protons, Neutrons & Electrons".
- On the upper left are the number of Protons, Neutrons & Electrons found in your model.
- On the right are three panels:
- Element (periodic table with the symbol of the element you made).
- Net Charge (positive + / negative - )
- Mass Number (Mass).
- Use these panels for the information you need to fill out your data table.
- Be sure to select "Stable/Unstable" under the "Show" options panel.
Task:
- Place a proton from the bowl into the atomic model. Notice what changes on the screen.
- Add a neutron from the bowl onto the atomic model. Notice what changes on the screen.
- Finally, add an electron from the bowl onto the atomic model. Notice what changes on the screen.
- Use this phet simulation to answer the questions in canvas.
Pay attention to the areas outlined in red in the diagram above.
